Drought Stress, Enzymes of Glutathione Metabolism, Oxidation Injury, and Protein Synthesis in Tortula ruralis

Abstract: The activities of glutathione reductase (EC 1.6.4.2), glutathione peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.9), and glutathione S-transferase (EC 2.5.1.18) were found to increase during slow drying or during rehydration following rapid drying of the drought-tolerant moss Tortula ruralls. Little change was observed in the activity of malate deydrogenase (NAD+ oxidoreductase, EC 1.1.1.37) during dehydration or subsequent rehydration. When the fissue was treated with cycloheximide, actinomycin D, or cordycepin, the increase in the a… Show more

“…In addition, the activity of a GPX was found to increase under drought stress in the moss Tortula ruralis (Dhindsa, 1991), and salt treatment induced the accumulation of a citrus PHGPX protein (Avsian-Kretchmer et al, 1999).…”

“…Al?hough it is well established that the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione reductase increase in response to drought stress (Burke et al, 1985;Dhindsa, 1991;Pastori and Trippi, 1992;PerlTreves and Galun, 1991), the role of ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC. 1.1 1.1.1 1) is still unclear (Buckland et al, 1991;Smirnoff and Colombe, 1988;Tanaka et a/., 1990).…”

“…Meteorological data put the presence of possible environmental stress conditions forth as an inducer of the total GST activity. During all season, those climatic conditions continued to end with higher GST activities, as expected [21][22][23][24][25]. From the beginning of the summer season till the middle, together with an increase in temperature, there was a decrease in precipitation, possibly causing lowered soil humidity.…”
