Drought Vulnerability Assessment Using Geospatial Techniques in Southern Queensland, Australia

Abstract: In Australia, droughts are recurring events that tremendously affect environmental, agricultural and socio-economic activities. Southern Queensland is one of the most drought-prone regions in Australia. Consequently, a comprehensive drought vulnerability mapping is essential to generate a drought vulnerability map that can help develop and implement drought mitigation strategies. The study aimed to prepare a comprehensive drought vulnerability map that combines drought categories using geospatial techniques an… Show more

“…Within those regions, stream flow fluctuates throughout the year. As a result, higher elevation zones are more vulnerable to drought than lower elevation zones (Hoque et al, 2021). Elevation data have been acquired for this study by the DEM of the NASA Space Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) utilizing InSAR with 1 Arc spatial resolution which is equivalent to 30-meter resolution.…”

“…Drought vulnerability mapping offers a framework for identifying relevant areas experiencing dryness/wetness. The maps can help decision-makers visualize the location and intensity of extreme droughts to establish measures that reduce potential drought-related losses [90]. One of the objectives of this study is to generate a disaster-vulnerability map combining the dryness-wetness categories in a GIS environment and to assess the spatial pattern of recent meteorological droughts in China.…”

“…In terms of meteorological droughts, this study relied on limited meteorological stations that are not capable of covering the entire study area, while stations that cover the whole domain could provide a better outcome. High-spatial-resolution maps can contribute to the accuracy and visualization of the results; hence, the study will benefit from highresolution datasets [90]. The parameters of the SARIMA models among different stations have regional heterogeneity (Table A2), which depend on the natural conditions such as the underlying surface, geographical location, and climatic characteristics [76].…”

“…Studies utilising both the AHP & MIF methods in drought assessment are very rare. However, in recent years, studies on drought assessment utilising GIS and AHP methods have been observed and the method has proved to be useful and reliable as well [21][22][23]. The AHP method developed by Saaty [24][25] helps in deciding or prioritising decision criteria in the pairwise comparison matrix when multiple alternatives are available for obtaining or deciding the best objective or goal.…”
