Drug Checking at New Zealand Festivals (Final Report)

Abstract: <div>Abstract</div><div><br></div><div>Background: The issue of drug checking at events such as music festivals has come to the fore in recent years both in New Zealand and other countries such as Australia and the UK. Drug checking, also referred to as pill testing, involves testing a small sample of a particular substance to determine what it contains. Alongside the actual testing drug checking services usually offer advice around how to take the substance more safely e.g.… Show more

“…Hutton emphasises that rates of drug disposal, the metric commonly used in determining drug checking services' efficacy in previous studies (Hollett & Gately, 2019;Martins et al, 2017), should not be the sole measurement of efficacy and that weight should also be given to the discussion which occurs alongside checking. KYSNZ highlights these conversations as a crucial component of drug checking and is the basis of what informed the earlier cited statistics in Hutton's (2021) research regarding changes in behaviour and improvements in harm reduction knowledge. The idea that drug checking is about more than just the test itself is supported by international research which also emphasises the value of face-to-face interventions during the checking process (Measham, 2020;Olsen et al, 2019).…”

“…Aotearoa, which has recently (in 2021) become the first country to nationally legalise the operation of drugtesting services at music festivals (Hutton, 2022), provides an excellent context in highlighting the efficacy of drug checking as a means for harm reduction. Hutton (2021) surveyed festival attendees in Aotearoa and interviewed members of the general public, medical personnel, festival organisers, and staff members of Know Your Stuff New Zealand (KYSNZ, the leading drug-checking service in Aotearoa). The research produced findings which have significant implications for the future of drug-testing at music festivals: with festival attendees, 63% of the sample (n=155) indicated their drug-taking behaviour changed after using drug checking services, with 87% indicating their knowledge of harm reduction was improved (53% indicating to a great deal).…”
