Drug Delivery Systems for Photodynamic Therapy: The Potentiality and Versatility of Electrospun Nanofibers

Abstract: Recently, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has become a promising approach for the treatment of a broad range of diseases, including oncological and infectious diseases. This minimally invasive and localized therapy is based on the production of reactive oxygen species able to destroy cancer cells and inactivate pathogens by combining the use of photosensitizers (PSs), light, and molecular oxygen. To overcome the drawbacks of drug systemic administration, drug delivery systems (DDS) can be used to carrier the PSs, a… Show more

“…Photodynamic therapy involves the use of a photoactive molecule, light, and molecular oxygen present in tissues. When combined, these three compounds are capable of producing reactive oxygen species (ROS), which will induce target cell death [ 7 , 27 , 28 ]. Despite being a promising treatment, it has been used in a small number of patients, due to skin photosensitivity (the most common adverse effect) caused by systemically administered photosensitizers.…”

“…Another advantage is the broad spectrum of therapy against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. However, the combination of aPDT with nanofibers is rather underrepresented in research, although it is gradually attracting more attention [ 21 ]. An in vivo study of polyurethane nanofibers with tetraphenylporphyrin reduced wound size and pain in chronic leg ulcers after visible light irradiation [ 22 ].…”
