Drug-Loaded Carbon Nanotube Incorporated in Nanofibers: A Multifunctional Nanocomposite for Smart Chronic Wound Healing

Abstract: A proper dressing for chronic wounds should be able to preserve moisture while absorbing the exudates and exhibit good antibacterial properties and reliable mechanical properties. Furthermore, drug delivery through a wound dressing is an added value that brings more therapeutic and regenerative functionalities. In this study, a carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotube–curcumin hybrid composite was embedded in a polyamide 6/poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibrous composite (PA6/PVA/CMWCNT-Cur) for controlled drug rele… Show more

“…43–46 Most pH-responsive wound dressings are based on internal pH variation (wound bed pH), while some work based on external stimuli. 47,48 An external-controlled pH-responsive platform was developed for wound healing which was activated through applying an external electronic charge. The platform was composed of poly(ethylene glycol)-diacrylate/LAPONITE® incorporating drug-loaded chitosan.…”

“…13,14 Meanwhile, the use of nanofibers in wound dressings has received attention because of their high surface-to-volume ratio and porosity. 15 Utilizing nanofibers, a suitable structure can be prepared to simulate the extracellular matrix, which speeds up wound healing. 7,16,17 Electrospinning is a simple, fast, and cost-effective method of producing fibers using natural and artificial polymers with diameters ranging from micro to nanometers.…”
