Drug safety: The concept, inception and its importance in patients’ health

Abstract: The drug safety concept has earned a lot of attention during the past decade due to the fact it plays a major role in patients' health. Recent laws stress this concept should be included in the process of new medications' approval and continued conduct of post-marketing drug evaluations. Benefit-risk assessment should be considered by all health care professionals when they need to give specific drugs to specific groups of patients. Therefore, more care should be given to some patients, such as pregnant women,… Show more

“…Clinically significant medications and patients related to ADRs were usually predicted and mostly preventable with few not preventable ADRs [ 6 8 ]. Moreover, some of the newly introduced drugs’ side effects were not fully documented hence would possibly exert severe deleterious impact during usage [ 9 ].…”

“…Such failures due to drug safety lead to high attrition rates and also affect patients’ health. There were a number of instances in the past when the marketed drugs with side effects caused severe implications, for instance, thalidomide (an antiemetic agent) that was administered to pregnant women resulted in severe birth deformities in the new borns 3 , 4 . Therefore, continuous efforts are being made to detect, monitor, and prevent adverse side effects from pharmaceutical products 5 .…”

“…But spontaneous reporting systems have limitations such as difficulties of recognizing ADR"s, the uncontrolled nature of the reporting method, and underreporting. So, retrospective and prospective surveillance methods are considered to be effective than spontaneous reporting systems 8 . Retrospective systems tend to underestimate the burden of the ADR"s in hospitals due to the poor documentation of ADR"s in medical case sheets and incomplete information available in ADR reports.…”
