Drugs in salmonid aquaculture – A review

Abstract: In contrast to mammalian therapeutics, the use of pharmaceutical substances is rather limited in fish. It is basically restricted to anaesthetic agents and anti-infective agents for parasitic and microbial diseases. Anaesthetic agents are used primarily in fish farm and laboratory settings to provide analgesia and immobilization of fish for minor procedures. The anti-infective agents are used for controlling diseases and the choice of drug depends on efficacy, ease of application, human safety, target animal s… Show more

“…Consequently, a wide range of chemicals are used in aquaculture, including antibacterials, pesticides, hormones, anaesthetics, various pigments, minerals and vitamins, although not all of them are antibacterial agents. As is the case in terrestrial animal production, antibacterials are also used in aquaculture in attempts to control bacterial disease (Burka et al, 1997;Horsberg, 1994;Defoirdt et al, 2011). Usage patterns also vary between countries and between individual aquaculture operations within the same country.…”

“…O presente estudo demonstrou que o ariacó apresentou uma maior suscetibilidade ao óleo de cravo quando comparado à truta arco-íris, tendo como base os resultados com a classe dos juvenis, que apresentaram pesos médios semelhantes. Porém, as diferenças entre espécies devem ser consideradas para efeito comparativo (BURKA et al, 1997;ROSS;ROSS, 2008).…”
