DsTau: study of tau neutrino production with 400 GeV protons from the CERN-SPS

Abstract: In the DsTau experiment at the CERN SPS, an independent and direct way to measure tau neutrino production following high energy proton interactions was proposed. As the main source of tau neutrinos is a decay of D s mesons, produced in proton-nucleus interactions, the project aims at measuring a differential cross section of this reaction. The experimental method is based on a use of high resolution emulsion detectors for effective registration of events with short lived particle decays. Here we present the mo… Show more

“…Combining mass, scale factor and other uncertainties leads to a lower value of 134 events and an upper value of 378 events, as summarized in table 3. The wide range of perturbative QCD predictions for the number of tau neutrino events for η ν > 5.3, here estimated to be a factor of 2.8, emphasizes the importance of additional experimental measurements of charm productions, for example, with the proposed DsTau experiment [31].…”

“…Since we are interested in the neutrino and antineutrino energy distributions, most of the figures in this section display the charm hadron energy distributions to show the impact of elements of the calculation that will eventually translate to the lepton energy distributions. They also serve as a reference for measurements of charm hadron production, e.g., the DsTau project [31]. Fig.…”

“…Emulsion detectors have been successfully employed by several neutrino experiments such as CHORUS [83], DONuT [40], and OPERA [45,[84][85][86]. The same technique has also been used in hadron experiments, e.g., WA75 [87] and E653 [88] for beauty particle studies, and recently DsTau [89,90] for charmed particle measurements.…”

“…Finally, we processed a real emulsion dataset to observe AT+TI model performance in a real-life application. We used a single image out of 3D tomographic image stack of size 640 × 512 pixels corresponding to 190 × 150 µm of emulsion detector area, irradiated with 400 GeV protons at different angles at the SPS accelerator at CERN [21]. We preprocess Figure 7: Tracking precision and efficiency as function of number of tracks in the image for the three models.…”
