Dual-Band Bi-Directional Pattern Reconfigurable Fractal Patch Antenna for Millimeter Wave Application

Abstract: A novel dual-band bi-directional reconfigurable antenna based on Koch patch is presented in this paper. By controlling the switches in the slots etched on the Koch patch, different far field bi-directional patterns at the dual-band around 60 GHz/80 GHz could be achieved. And full azimuthal coverage at this dual-band is possible by electronically controlling the switches in the slots of the patch.

“…There are many research topics on bidirectional antennas such as [12][13][14][15][16] that extensively used various ring shapes (i.e., waveguide sections with moderate widths) such as rectangular, circular, and elliptical rings, to force the radiating beams in two opposite directions. Some other techniques are also introduced such as collinear antennas with parasitic wire elements in [17,18] and a fractal patch antenna with pattern reconfigurable capability in [19].…”

“…Therefore, for a base station antenna, a bidirectional antenna is more suitable for the street cell than a typical omnidirectional antenna. Thus, many researches and developments on bidirectional antenna have been extensively conducted as reviewed in literature [6][7][8][9][10][11]. From the aforementioned researches, it is evident that development of a bidirectional antenna that has suitable characteristics for a particular application is desired.…”

“…In addition, bidirectional antennas can be enlarged the cell size along the street in microcell environment [1,2]. Therefore, many researches and developments on bidirectional antennas have been extensively conducted [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Nevertheless, the low cost must be considered since the number of cell is very large.…”
