Abstract: A molecule, namely 2-(1H-benzo [d]imidazol-2-yl)-6-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-bromophenol (BIBTB), having a two-way proton transfer unit of thiazole and imidazole moieties was synthesized and characterized by NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and single-crystal diffraction studies. Steady state and time-resolved spectral studies of BIBTB support excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), causing imineamine tautomerization through a two-way 6-membered H-bonded ring, where the N a… Show more

“…Analogously, 3-(1 H -benzoimidazol-2-yl)-2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde ( HBIA ), 14 where the S atom is replaced by NH, also shows ESIPT towards the N centre. We had recently published a study on 2-(1 H -benzo[ d ]imidazol-2-yl)-6-(benzo[ d ]thiazol-2-yl)-4-bromophenol ( BIBTB ) 19 where simultaneous proton transfer occurs towards the thiazole and imidazole units, causing imine–amine isomerization through two 6-membered hydrogen-bonded networks. Remarkably, the photoisomerization in BIBTB is shown to be favorable toward the imidazole ring in highly polar solvent, whereas it is favored toward the thiazole ring in nonpolar and moderately polar solvent.…”
