Dual Diagnosis in Prisoners: Childhood Sexual and Physical Abuse as Predictors in Men and Women

Abstract: The study aims to determine the rate of dual diagnosis (DD), examine the most common mental disorders, and determine whether a history of childhood sexual/physical abuse (CSA/CPA) is associated with this phenomenon. One-hundred and eighty inmates from a Spanish prison were assessed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview and the Addiction Severity Index-6. The data showed that 46.8% of the males and 65.1% of the females had a substance use disorder. With regard to CPA, similar percentages were … Show more

“…Compared with other people who are incarcerated, those with dual disorders have more serious criminal histories, including previous incarcerations 9 and violent offences, 10 and higher rates of serious institutional misconduct while in prison. 10 Dual disorders are more common among women than among men 9 and among survivors of childhood physical and sexual abuse 11 who are involved in the criminal justice system, and they are associated with physical health problems 9 and impairments in psychosocial, cognitive, and occupational functioning. 12 After release from prison, individuals with dual disorders have a substantially higher risk of reincarceration, 10 , 13 attempting suicide, 14 and hospitalisation due to injuries than do those without.…”

“…Estimated rates of childhood trauma exposure for men incarcerated in US prisons range from 14 per cent (Harlow, 1999) to 77 per cent (Wolff and Shi, 2009). For men incarcerated in Spanish prisons, rates of childhood physical abuse range from 25.0 to 33.0 per cent, with lower rates for sexual abuse, ranging from 3.2 to 10.3 per cent (Villagrá et al, 2019;Wolff and Caravaca Sá nchez, 2019). As might be expected, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is also prevalent among incarcerated samples (Wolff et al, 2014).…”
