Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry–based body volume measurement for 4-compartment body composition

Abstract: A novel method to calculate TBV with the use of a clinical DXA system was developed, compared against ADP as proof of principle, and used in Lohman's 4C body composition model. The DXA-volume approach eliminates many of the inherent inaccuracies associated with displacement measures for volume and, if validated in larger groups of participants, would simplify the acquisition of 4C body composition to a single DXA scan and TBW measure.

“…Polyoxymethylene has been shown previously to be a good candidate for representing the x-ray attenuation properties of protein. 17,41 The calculated linear attenuation curves based on the molecular structure of the materials involved in this study are presented in Fig. 2, where a good agreement between protein and polyoxymethylene can be found in the energy range under investigation.…”

“…Saliva samples were frozen for later batch analysis. The samples were processed in duplicate for measurement of deuterium enrichment by wavelength-scanned cavity ringdown spectroscopy (Isotopic Water Analyzer, L2120-I; Picarro), and TBW was calculated as previously described (33).…”

“…16,51 Two holes, with a diameter of 0.95 cm, were drilled in the phantom and were subsequently filled with water and vegetable oil. Thus, the three-compartment phantom consisted of surrogate materials for water, lipid, and protein, in terms of their x-ray attenuation properties, respectively.…”
