Dual histone H3 methylation marks at lysines 9 and 27 required for interaction with CHROMOMETHYLASE3

Abstract: The authors apologize for an error made in the 'Materials and methods' section of the above paper. The first sentence of 'Preparation of peptides and protein and the binding assays' should read: 'Synthetic peptides corresponding to the trimethyl H3K9 and trimethyl H3K27 regions include residues 1-15 and 15-32, respectively, of H3 tail'.

“…Consistent with previous results in Arabidopsis and maize (Lindroth et al 2004;Zhang et al 2007;Makarevitch et al 2013), H3K27me3 regions were more abundant in euchromatic zones of chromosomes with a higher gene density and, apparently, less prevalent in the pericentromeric regions (Fig. 2).…”

“…Mull et al (2006) further proposed that the sensitivity of CHG methylation to SAH-hydrolase impairment may be explained by requirement of coordinate action of multiple transmethylation reactions. Indeed, the catalysis of CHG methylation is a complex process dependent on coordinate action of specific class of DNA methyltransferases (CMT3) and simultaneous methylation of lysine residues (K9, K27) in H3 histone (Jackson et al 2002;Malagnac et al 2002;Lindroth et al 2004). Recent observation of a hypomethylation effect of DHPA on H3K9 methylation (Baubec et al 2010) supports the hypothesis.…”

“…Moreover, in both regions, clusters of H3K27me1 occur. It has been shown in vitro that CMT3 is attracted to heterochromatin by binding methylated H3K27 (Lindroth et al 2004). It has also been proposed that H3K9me1 alone is not sufficient for DNA methylation in Arabidopsis heterochromatin and additionally H3K9me2 is required (Jackson et al 2004).…”
