Dual-mode photoswitching of luminescence

Abstract: The fluorescence and chirality of photoswitchable inherently dissymmetric alkenes cis 1 and trans-2-nitro-7-dimethylamino-9-(2´,3´-dihydro-1´H-naphtho[2,1-b]thiopyran-1´-ylidene)-9H-thioxanthene 2 are reversibly modulated by irradiation whereas photoresponsive effects and emission are regulated by reversible protonation.

“…[12,13,18,21] In an earlier communication [13a] we have already reported the photochemical properties of some dithienylethene-tungsten complexes, we herein describe the synthesis and characterization of the novel diarylethene based molecular switches 1 ± 4 (see Scheme 1) bearing metal ion complexes of tungsten, rhenium, and ruthenium as well as their photochromic properties.…”

“…22 Compound 2 shows dual-mode switching behavior as we can reach the on mode (switching) and off mode (no switching) simply by deprotonation or protonation. It also exhibits gated response behavior with proton-dependent photomodulation of molecular chirality and fluorescence with the possibility to address three distinct states: on, dimmed, and off ( Figure 5).…”

“…Related chiral photochromic molecules [28] were shown to display different fluorescence emission spectra which are regulated by reversible protonation. It is another case of gated photochromism (see definition).…”
