Dual nitrate isotopes in dry deposition: Utility for partitioning NOx source contributions to landscape nitrogen deposition

Abstract: [1] Dry deposition is a major component of total atmospheric nitrogen deposition and thus an important source of bioavailable nitrogen to ecosystems. However, relative to wet deposition, less is known regarding the sources and spatial variability of dry deposition. This is in part due to difficulty in measuring dry deposition and associated deposition velocities. Passive sampling techniques offer potential for improving our understanding of the spatial distribution and sources of gaseous and aerosol N species,… Show more

“…5c and 5d). All the observed values of δ 15 N-NO 3 − fall within the previously reported atmospheric δ 15 N-NO 3 − ranges in land (Elliott et al, 2009;Fang et al, 2011;Felix and Elliott, 2014) and in marine boundary layer (Altieri et al, 2013;Gobel et al, 2013;Hastings et al, 2003;Morin et al, 2009;Savarino et al, 2013). The mass-weighted mean aerosol δ 15 N-NO 3 − in 2014 (+1.6‰ in the ECSs, -1.1‰ for dust aerosol and -2.6‰ for background aerosol sampled in the NWPO) were similar to those in 2015 (+1.9‰ in the ECSs, -3.8‰…”

“…Additionally, regional deposition δ 15 N values consistently show strong seasonal variation (Elliott et al 2009, Jai and Chen 2010, Kundu et al 2010, Mara et al 2009, Rolff et al 2008 sometimes reaching values as high as 15 ‰ (Elliott et al 2009). Consequently, the assumption that deposition δ 15 N is sufficiently different from background ecosystem δ 15 N is not consistently warranted.…”

“…Consequently, the assumption that deposition δ 15 N is sufficiently different from background ecosystem δ 15 N is not consistently warranted. The assumption that low δ 15 N values of atmospherically-deposited N drive temporal decreases in tree ring δ 15 N is particularly speculative without data about the actual δ 15 N values of atmospherically-deposited forms of N in the region (Elliott et al 2007, Elliott et al 2009, Kundu et al 2010, Hastings et al 2013 In some studies, increased N emissions from vehicular exhaust reportedly both increased wood δ 15 N due to high exhaust δ 15 N (Saurer et al 2004, Guerrieri et al 2009) and decreased wood δ 15 N due to low exhaust δ 15 N (Savard et al 2009, Doucet et al 2012. These findings are not necessarily mutually exclusive, as the previously mentioned regional variation in pollution δ 15 N could result in high deposition δ 15 N in some regions and low deposition δ 15 N in others (ex.…”

“…Today, nitrogen and its derivative compounds are studied due to their importance as an essential element in crop production and as a causative agent of environmental impacts, both in the soil and in the atmosphere (Ehhalt et al, 2001;Elliott et al, 2009). In the atmosphere, nitrogen is found in the form of nitrogen monoxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), hydrazoic acid (HN 3 ), nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and ammonia (NH 3 ), as a result of pollutant emissions due to various anthropocentric activities (Delon et al, 2007).…”
