We propose a fast reroute scheme for the single link failure protection of IP multicast network. A multicast network connects nodes as a spanning tree, which is vulnerable to link failures. Our scheme uses ring topologies to ensure a backup path always exists to any single link failure and only a few nodes in the neighborhood of the failed link have to react to the failure. Compare to other solutions, we have four advantages: (1) The multicast tree can be arbitrary. (2) There is only a minimal disruption and there would be no packet loss. (3) Failure protection is available to a wider set of network topologies. (4) Only a small number of multicast nodes are involved and the number of spare links used are also small.This full text paper was peer reviewed at the direction of IEEE Communications Society subject matter experts for publication in the IEEE "GLOBECOM" 2009 proceedings.

FDDI is an optical standard for data transmission which gave a transmission speed of 100 Mbit/s in a local area network. The throughput and response time is a measure of performance of a network. The performance of the FDDI system depend on various parameters namely ring latency, TTRT, number of stations, bandwidth, transmission delay, propagation time and group velocity. The throughput or the efficiency of the network can be increased by controlling and then minimizing the ring latency with respect to TTRT. The response time can be improved by decreasing the transmission delay and propagation time with respect to the bandwidth and group velocity respectively.

The address of the ring local area network (LAN) station must be unique in the ring. This paper considers the distributed control-type ring LAN with the configuration management function and proposes an MAC layer address test protocol, which can avoid the duplication of MAC addresses. In the ring LAN, the number of stations contained in the ring is increased or decreased by contraction or expansion of the ring.The duplication of addresses can occur due to the change of the stations, i.e., the set of MAC addresses. Consequently, the proposed system executes the duplicated address test being aligned to the ring connection of the station or the ring reconfiguration. The station executes the duplicated address test by the same protocol for various topologies of the ring LAN, such as the single ring, the simple dual ring, and the dual ring with the hierarchical star-ring structure. By the proposed protocol, it is possible to construct the ring LAN so that the stations have an inherent MAC address no matter how the ring may be reconfigurated. The proposed algorithm is described by the fmitestate machine (FSM), and a series of processing flows is shown for the address test accompanying the ring reconfiguration. The proposed protocol is included in the IEEE Recommended Practice for the duplicated address test in the dual-ring LAN with the ring reconfiguration function.
