“…A number of contributions over the last two decades have addressed why this did not happen. Most have focused on his omission from the ‘canon’ and so especially sought to reposition Du Bois as a ‘founding figure’ of sociology (Bell, Grosholz, & Stewart, 1996; Gates, 2007; Gates & Oliver, 1999; Kendhammer, 2007; Lemert, 1994; Morris, 2015; Young, Watts, Marable, Lemert, & Higginbotham, 2007; Zuckerman, 2004).…”

“…Elsewhere, Ellis’s (1992) study of Du Bois during the First World War, concentrating especially on the controversies over Du Bois’ insistence on the need to ‘close ranks’ in support of the US war effort, focuses on The Crisis magazine which Du Bois edited. Kendhammer (2007) too, engaging more explicitly with social theory, offers a historical treatment of the later period of Du Bois’ life and work, especially his pan-Africanism, and considers the extent to which this might represent a non-linear strand throughout his work.…”

“…Nationalism is the most important ideology of the 20th century. It is based on belief that peoples have shared language, culture, history that differentiates them from other nationalities (Kendhammer, 2007). Political ideology is a vital ingredient in developing party cohesion and, therefore, relevant in policy formulation.…”

“… 1. The story of Du Bois’ contribution is complicated and includes, for example, intellectual and political excursions throughout his life and which saw Du Bois move through German historicism to embrace liberalism, communism and finally Pan-Africanism (indeed, Du Bois died in Ghana in 1963 and was given a state funeral by Kwame Nkrumah). See Lewis (2000, 1993) for a ‘periodisation’ account of Du Bois’ work, and Kendhammer (2007) for a critical but constructive response to reading Du Bois in this manner. …”
