Duplex treatment with Hastelloy cage on AISI 5160 steel cutting tools

Abstract: AISI 5160 steel has high toughness and ductility. However, in specific applications, better tribological performance is required. In this sense, the study's objective was to perform plasma nitriding with Hastelloy's cathodic cage followed by the conventional plasma nitriding in AISI 5160 steel to produce high hardness and wear resistance. The results showed that the samples and cutting tools subjected to this process showed higher wear resistance than untreated samples and high-speed steel tools. The sample su… Show more

“…All samples had their upper surfaces prepared with 400 to 1200 mesh sandpaper and polished with diamond paste until a mirrored and scratchfree appearance was acquired. Before the plasma treatment, the samples were dipped in alcohol, subjected to ultrasound for 10 minutes to eliminate remaining impurities, and dried with airflow at room temperature 20,21 .…”

“…The equipment used for plasma treatments consists of a gas supply system, a reactor, a direct current source with a maximum value of 2 A, a vacuum pump, and a digital thermometer. The whole apparatus is better described in previous works 21,22 . The treatments were performed with a pre-sputtering stage lasting one hour, 350 °C, and 1:1 flow (Ar/H 2 ) to remove remaining residues.…”

“…The parameters used to carry out the tests on the samples were 8N of load and 38.5 Hz of Ball rotation, in which caps were performed under caps at times of 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 minutes. In addition, the wear volume was calculated according to the method presented in more detail yby Araújo et al 15 . Three tests were performed on each sample to obtain the measures' average and respective deviations.…”

“…Duplex treatment is commonly found to be conventional nitriding (PN) followed by cathodic cage plasma nitriding (CCPN) 13 , or magnetron sputtering deposition 11,14 . Araújo et al 15 , used PN post-treatment after CCPN with 5160 steel Hastelloy cage to obtain thick diffusion layers and wear-resistant chromium-nickel nitride films 15,16 .…”

“…The coating adhesion with the substrate is essential because poor adhesion can deteriorate the corrosion resistance under an aggressive environment and mechanical loading. 5 Therefore, it is preferred to use a surface engineering technique that involves the deposition of hard coating on the surface and a thermochemical diffusion process (such as nitriding) to create a transition zone between coating and substrate to improve coating adhesion. 4 The transition metals nitrides exhibit exceptional physical and chemical properties, which can be used as a protective coating to improve surface properties.…”
