Duplicate and Conquer: Multiple Homologs ofPHOSPHORUS-STARVATION TOLERANCE1Enhance Phosphorus Acquisition and Sorghum Performance on Low-Phosphorus Soils

Abstract: Low soil phosphorus (P) availability is a major constraint for crop production in tropical regions. The rice (Oryza sativa) protein kinase, PHOSPHORUS-STARVATION TOLERANCE1 (OsPSTOL1), was previously shown to enhance P acquisition and grain yield in rice under P deficiency. We investigated the role of homologs of OsPSTOL1 in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) performance under low P. Association mapping was undertaken in two sorghum association panels phenotyped for P uptake, root system morphology and architecture in … Show more

“…In a previous study on NH 4 + toxicity in Arabidopsis (Li et al, 2010), it was similarly observed that contact with the root tip was both essential and sufficient to explain the development of the NH 4 + toxicity syndrome and, more specifically, the inhibition of primary and LR growth. Several studies have indicated that nutrients, such as N and P, with heterogeneous distribution in the soil and rhizosphere (Hodge, 2004;Britto and Kronzucker, 2013;Hufnagel et al, 2014), are sensed by root-localized mechanisms (Forde and Lorenzo, 2001;Forde and Walch-Liu, 2009). Iron toxicity as a syndrome in plants is typically associated with an excessive amount of the ferrous form (the Fe 2+ ion) in the soil (Vigani, 2012).…”

“…Wall-associated kinases have been found to play a role in disease resistance (30,31), phosphorus-starvation tolerance (32), and developmental processes such as root growth (33) and gametophyte development (34). A recent study reported that the maize quantitative head smut resistance gene qHSR1 also encodes a wall-associated kinase.…”

“…Thus, the most divergent and efficient lines can be used as founders to generate improved populations with a high frequency of genes favorable to traits involved in PUE. Moreover, efficient lines can be crossed with inefficient lines in order to generate segregating populations for quantitative trait loci mapping (Mundim et al, 2013), as was performed in several studies (Zhu and Lynch, 2004;Zhu et al, 2005;Hufnagel et al, 2014;Azevedo et al 2015).…”
