Durability Indicators Comparison for SCC and CC in Tropical Coastal Environments

Abstract: Self-compacting concrete (SCC) demands more studies of durability at higher temperatures when subjected to more aggressive environments in comparison to the conventional vibrated concrete (CC). This work aims at presenting results of durability indicators of SCC and CC, having the same water/binder relations and constituents. The applied methodologies were electrical resistivity, diffusion of chloride ions and accelerated carbonation experiments, among others, such as microstructure study, scanning electron mi… Show more

“…The main mineral components of the steel slag aggregate were calcium silicate, Ca(OH) 2 , f-CaO, RO phase (RO phase is a broad solid solution formed by melting FeO, MgO, and other divalent metal oxides such as MnO) and CaCO 3 . Because the steel slag has been stored in the open air for a long time, some f-CaO has reacted with water to form Ca(OH) 2 , and some has carbonated to CaCO 3 . The decrease of f-CaO reduces the expansion effect when being used in concrete, which is beneficial to the volume stability of SSCC.…”

“…Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is one of the key research directions of the high-performance concrete industry because it flows under its own weight, can completely fill the formwork without mechanical compaction, and has the advantages of fast construction, easy pouring, high efficiency, etc. The research and application of SCC have attracted attention all over the world [1][2][3]. The concept of 2 of 15 SCC and related scientific tests were first proposed and tested in Tokyo University, Japan, by Okamura et al [4,5], and they also started to analyze and study the design method of SCC mix proportion through conducting a lot of experimental research.…”

“…As concrete cures, its surface temperature declines, leading to huge outer and inner temperature differences and the resulting development of surface tension. The cracks that form when such tension is greater than concrete tensile strength are channels for the ingress of aggressive external agents, compromising the service life of structures [5].…”
