Durability Investigation of plastic gears

Abstract: Plastic materials can be used for various gears and gear mechanisms due to their qualities, like wear resistance when running dry, low noise, vibration damping, low inertia, low manufacturing cost, etc. However, they also expose with temperature connected problems like rapidly decreasing load, thermal expansion and accuracy of moulded gears. Therefore, it is a challenge to produce gears with adequate accuracy and durability to serve in contemporary mechatronic applications in automotive, in medical equipment a… Show more

“…Traditional external lubricants utilized in metallic materials, i.e., mineral oil and mineral lubricating grease, can induce the swelling of plastic components, deteriorating their mechanical and tribological properties [19,20]. By means of this, only when choosing compatible lubricants can the performance and lifetime of plastic tribological components be effectively improved [21,22]. In actuality, internal lubricants, such as graphite-, Teflon-, and petroleum-based lubricants, have been extensively utilized in polymeric composites [23][24][25].…”

“…Due to their beneficial properties, they are widely used in various industrial sectors such as automotive, medical engineering and electronics [ 1 ]. Compared to metal gears, they show numerous advantages such as economic production by injection molding [ 1 ], dry run capability [ 2 ], lightweight construction [ 3 ], possibility of material modification [ 2 ] and noise reduction [ 4 ]. In terms of achievable lifetime and loading capacity, steel–plastic gear sets are the ideal pairing [ 2 ].…”
