Durability of the Cutting Tool with Different Thin Layers when Inconel 718 is Machined

Abstract: Inconel 718 alloy exhibits high strength and creep-rupture strength at high temperatures. These properties are heavily influenced by heat treatment. Machining, especially milling of this alloy is very difficult because of the high strength and hardness at high temperature. Self-hardening is one of the problems, which leads to enormous tool wear. Productivity of machining is relatively low. This paper is focused on the factors which have the greatest effect on the cutting tool wear and the machined surface qual… Show more

“…Schornik V. [6] confirmed in a practical experiment that the chemical composition and the thickness of the thin layer influences the durability and cutting forces when milling nickel alloy Inconel 718. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the choice of the proper thin layer for machining Inconel 718.…”

“…It is necessary to select appropriate cutting conditions that will increase the cutting tool life and also stabilize the cutting process. [3] [4] [6] Process parameters are also based on experience gained from previous tests of machining Inconel 718. Table 2.…”

“…This was due to high wear resistance and the low thermal conductivity of the TiN coating [7]. Influence of different thin layers on the machining of Inconel 718 is described in [9].…”

“…Carbide cutting tools are widely used for machining Inconel 718 in the form of solid cutting tools or cutting inserts. Several studies [1,2] deal with the lengthening of the cutting tool life by modification of the cutting edge. It was found that using an optimal value of the edge radius is important for good adhesion of the thin layer and longer tool life.…”
