“…The problem is greater under intensive grazing systems in humid and warm regions where a high level of infection occurs, and particularly with high stocking rates. The adverse effects of trichostrongyle infection have been minimised by introducing control programmes (Fisher and Jacobs 1995, Eysker and others 1998), based on epidemiological knowledge and on the ability of modern anthelmintic compounds to remove worms from the host, combined with specific management practices (Herd 1988, Williams and others 1988,1997, Craig 1995). The environmental conditions in humid and warm temperate regions of both the northern and southern hemispheres allow for long growing seasons and year‐round grazing, with the opportunity for near optimal larval development in most months.…”

“…A longer period of protection against infective trichostrongyle larvae will delay egg excretion, leading to a lower level of contamination on pastures. Macrocyclic lactone molecules have been shown to persist longer than other anthelmintic compounds (Armour and others 1985, Weatherley and others 1993, Entrocasso and others 1996, Williams and others 1997). Recently, new long‐acting formulations have been developed to extend the anthelmintic activity of the avermectin family, and they have been marketed worldwide.…”

“…The advantages of persistent anthelmintic efficacy of the injectable formulations of IVM, DRM and MXD in strategical programs for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes and lungworm in cattle are well documented (Williams et al. , 1992, 1997; Jones et al.…”

“…The advantages of persistent anthelmintic efficacy of the injectable formulations of IVM, DRM and MXD in strategical programs for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes and lungworm in cattle are well documented (Williams et al, 1992(Williams et al, , 1997Jones et al, 1993). However, some studies have shown that cattle treated with MXD pour-on achieved an advantage over the other endectocide compounds in attaining a highly and persistent level of nematode control and weight gains in beef calves (Williams et al, 1999).…”
