Duration of Breastfeeding in Late Preterm Infants: Maternal and Infant Factors

Abstract: Background More than 550,000 late preterm infants are born each year in Indonesia. These infants, born between 340/7–366/7 weeks, have more complications than term infants. Breastfeeding is considered the most optimal nutrition for newborn infants. Two groups of factors are important for successful breastfeeding: infant and maternal factors. The infant factors can be evaluated using the Infant Breastfeeding Assessment Tool and the maternal aspects with the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale–Short Form. Aim To d… Show more

“…The subsequent SSC, also known as Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), is highly recommended for both premature and full-term newborns. For the mother, KMC facilitates lactation; stimulation of the skin increases the release of oxytocin, which is responsible for the let-down reflex and the contraction of the milk ducts, facilitating the flow of the milk [11,12]. In low-birth-weight and preterm infants, KMC improves thermoregulation, reduces the risk of nosocomial infections, decreases the incidence of apnea, and improves the survival of low-birth-weight and preterm infants [13,14].…”

“…As a result, nursing is crucial for premature babies both immediately after birth and over the few months. 14 If breast milk is provided to a baby correctly and until they are six months old, there is enough breast milk composition for their growth and development. 8 Because calcium from breast milk is more effectively absorbed than calcium from the formula, the advantages of exclusive breastfeeding include supporting children's growth, particularly their height.…”

“…The most common morbidities experienced by LPIs include respiratory complications, feeding difficulty, hypoglycemia, temperature instability, hyperbilirubinemia, and neurodevelopmental delays. 1,3 The perinatal history of congenital infection of CMV and HSV that cause very low birth weight and microcephaly further add to the problems and place the patient at a high risk of developmental delay and cognitive impairment.…”

“…In Indonesia, more than 550,000 late preterm infant babies are born yearly. [1][2][3] Compared with term infants, preterm infants have an immature central nervous system. Between 34 and 40 weeks of gestational age, cortical volume increases by 50%, and 25% of cerebellar development occurs.…”
