Dyadic spatial resolution reduction transcoding for H.264/AVC

Abstract: In this paper, we examine spatial resolution downscaling transcoding for H.264/AVC video coding. A number of advanced coding tools limit the applicability of techniques which were developed for previous video coding standards. We present a spatial resolution reduction transcoding architecture for H.264/AVC, which extends open-loop transcoding with a low-complexity compensation technique in the reduced-resolution domain. The proposed architecture tackles the problems in H.264/AVC and avoids visual artifacts in … Show more

“…Transcoding from a low cost encoder format to a low cost decoder provides a practical solution for these types of communications. Although H.264/AVC has been included in multiple transcoding architectures from other coding formats (such as MPEG-2 to H.264/AVC (Fernandez-Escribano et al, 2007 or even homogeneous H.264/AVC (De Cock et al, 2010), proposals in WZ to H.26x to support mobile communications are rather recent and there are only a few approaches so far.…”

“…In the literature different techniques exist for homogeneous transcoding such as [6] [7] and for heterogeneous transcoding [8] [9]. In the framework of SVC-based video transcoding, several techniques have been proposed in the recent past for introducing scalability in compressed bitstreams.…”
