Dye-sensitized photocatalyst for effective water splitting catalyst

Abstract: Renewable hydrogen production is a sustainable method for the development of next-generation energy technologies. Utilising solar energy and photocatalysts to split water is an ideal method to produce hydrogen. In this review, the fundamental principles and recent progress of hydrogen production by artificial photosynthesis are reviewed, focusing on hydrogen production from photocatalytic water splitting using organic–inorganic composite-based photocatalysts.

“…Organic Molecules as Photosensitizers Organic photosensitizers, due to their large molar extinction coefficient and π-donor-acceptor characteristics, are used to enhance the light-harvesting efficiency of many semiconducting materials [64]. Photosensitizers including organic molecules, dyes, pigments, and metal complexes have been explored in various applications like water splitting, photodynamic therapy for ablation of cancer cells, and sensitizing enzymes in whole-cell microbes [65].…”

“…Other than doping, sensitization is another possible method to increase visible light reactivity. While most sensitized TiO 2 research was done towards photocatalytic water splitting [18], very little research was done towards photocatalytic degradation where sensitization is done prior to degradation. Commonly, the pollutant dye acts as sensitizer and self-degradation occurs [19] Visible light-induced degradation of carbon tetrachloride on dye-sensitized TiO 2 .…”
