Dynamic analysis of baffled fuel‐storage tanks using the ALE finite element method

Abstract: This paper is concerned with the parametric investigation on the structural dynamic response of moving fuel‐storage tanks with baffles. Since the structural dynamic behaviour is strongly coupled with interior liquid motion, the design of a fuel‐storage tank securing the structural stability becomes the appropriate suppression of the flow motion, which is in turn related to the baffle design. In order to numerically investigate the parametric dynamic characteristics of moving tanks, we employ the arbitrary Lagr… Show more

“…In the Lagrangian kinematic description of the fluid flow involving the moving boundary, the flow boundary identification is trivial but the painstaking smoothing (rezoning) process [11] of the fluid grid (mesh) is indispensable owing to the extreme grid distortion. On the other hand, in the Eulerian kinematic description, the grid distortion does not occur at all but the flow boundary tacking becomes a critical issue.…”

“…Once the control-volumewise constant volume fractions are sought, the free surface boundary of rainwater is identified using the linear interpolation technique, as illustrated in Figure 6(b). On the other hand, the pressure field of rainwater is obtained by the SIMPLER pressure correction algorithm, in which the flow continuity is enforced through the pressure correction process [11] so that the continuity equation is replaced with the resulting pressure equation. Figure 7(a) shows a typical time variation of the wheel cylinder pressure at braking that was obtained by experiment with an ABS-equipped four-wheel automobile.…”

“…The problem is formulated according to the fully nonlinear potential flow theory, so that the state variable is the velocity potential. In order for the free surface tracking that secures the numerical stability and accuracy, we integrate the kinematic and dynamic boundary conditions by making use of the direct time differentiation and the predictor-corrector method, together with the mass-conservative remeshing scheme [14]. Meanwhile, the flow velocity field is accurately interpolated from the velocity potential with second-order elements according to the least square method.…”
