Dynamic analysis of earthquake phenomena by means of pseudo phase plane

Abstract: This paper analyses earthquake data in the perspective of dynamical systems and its Pseudo Phase Plane representation. The seismic data is collected from the Bulletin of the International Seismological Centre. The geological events are characterised by their magnitude and geographical location and described by means of time series of sequences of Dirac impulses. Fifty groups of data series are considered, according to the Flinn-Engdahl seismic regions of Earth. For each region, Pearson's correlation coefficien… Show more

“…Fig. 8 depicts the dendrogram generated by successive (agglomerative) clustering and average-linkage method [95,96]. We cut the tree at the level 0.27, since below this value we see that the clusters became too close from each other.…”

“…The set of trajectories builds the SSP representation of the dynamical evolution along time. For k ≤ 3, the SSP can be depicted and the system behavior can be inferred from the corresponding graphical representation [33,51]. (8) where D α {·} is the derivative of order α and (·) and ψ (·) represent the gamma and digamma functions, respectively.…”

“…The PSS is a technique adopted in the context of non-linear dynamics, especially useful when there is a lack of knowledge about the system [49,50]. Generally speaking, the PSS allows a dynamical system to be represented in a higher dimensional space by taking a small sample of signals representing measurements of the system time history.…”

“…Usually we choose n = 3, or n = 2, in order to facilitate the interpretation of the graphs. The PSS produced by u(t) is expected to allow conclusions about the system dynamics [50]. A key issue in the PSS technique is the choice of τ.…”
