There is a strong motivation, in particular in the domain of healthcare, for new perspectives on context-driven research and computing in order to provide next-generation services to people that are tailored to individual needs rather than generalised assumptions that could potentially endanger human life. For that, context awareness is a key requirement in order to reach a better understanding of human-centric computing systems and environments, and subsequently, the deployment of dedicated services that are specifically adapted to the context to which they are applied. Such context-driven services would be able to provide the means of delivering situation-aware and person-centric services that ultimately may even anticipate future behaviour and problems of the user itself and the context in which the user finds themselves. However, the perpetual provision of contextual data in pervasive environments is far from being easy and includes major challenges that vary between environments. The reason for this is not only the sensor diversity within the environments themselves but also the contextual scope to be analysed and the amount of data to be collected and correlated to actually reach a minimum degree of contextual understanding. For that reason, in this chapter, contextual environments have been categorised as well as their interaction into different groups that reflect individual contextual levels of interest of which contextual understanding is required and consequently to which services can be applied. 9.1 Introduction On a worldwide context the human population continues to grow rapidly with an increasing percentage represented by the elderly. For future network scenarios to exhibit autonomic behaviour, both networks and application components and services need to be aware of their computational and environmental context, and must tune their activities accordingly. In this position paper, we propose an abstract architecture for knowledge networks that addresses the key issues of how both physical contextual knowledge and social knowledge from the users of communication networks can be used to form a knowledge space in support of autonomic agents dealing with network elements and applications. We discuss that the availability of raw contextual data is not enough to achieve meaningful autonomic behaviours. Rather, contextual information should be properly organised into 'networks of knowledge', to be exploited by both network and application components as the basic 'nervous system' in which situational stimuli reify into digital knowledge, and by means of which components can properly orchestrate their activities in a globally meaningful way. Here we firstly discuss the fundamental role of knowledge networks, and try to sketch what actual form and position such knowledge networks could assume. Then, we analyse some simple scenarios of use, showing how it is possible for the components of an autonomic communication system to build such knowledge networks autonomously; and, at the same time, to exploit them for orchestrating their activities in a type of stigmergy-based knowledge-rich system. Eventually, we sketch a rough research agenda and discuss the relations with other research areas.

A core goal for autonomous systems such as proposed here is automated collaboration in order to perform tasks or share information. The system is always distributed by default and frequently on a large-scale. It can be argued that robustness and economy demand the deployment of a tested autonomic supporting infrastructure whenever possible. A knowledge network is a generic structure that organises distributed knowledge of any format into a system that will allow it to be retrieved efficiently. The rationale of the knowledge network is to act as a middle layer that connects to a multitude of sources, organises them based on various concepts and finally provides well-structured, pre-organised knowledge to individual services and applications. To use the knowledge network we need a querying mechanism to be able to retrieve information. The knowledge network will organise itself in an autonomous manner and it is possible to use the querying mechanism also as part of the knowledge organization mechanism, to autonomously create temporary views that reflect the use of the system. This paper is an attempt to investigate the peculiarities of node behaviour in traversing such a knowledge network. We investigate a variety of methods of traversing a knowledge network.
