Dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme for network-slicing-based TDM-PON toward the beyond-5G era

Abstract: In the coming 5G mobile communications era, a huge number of wireless access points will be densely deployed for networks such as mobile fronthaul and Internet-of-Things networks. A network-slicing-based time-division-multiplexing passive optical network (TDM-PON) is one solution for cost-effectively accommodating these access points. It enables us to converge these multiple networks that have different requirements by virtually isolating each sub-network on a single TDM-PON. To achieve this TDM-PON convergenc… Show more

“…It could be reduced to about 5us in [4] through a novel intra-channel activation, called whisper ranging, to avoid the interruption of low-latency services. In addition, a recent study proposed to assign the discovery window by using network slicing [5], which is to accommodate fronthaul traffic and discovery window through different slices. Another biggest latency consumer is the procedure of dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA), which is focused in this paper.…”

“…Wireless access using C-RAN configurations using timedivision optical network (TDM-PON) have been studied to realize cost-effective implementation. TDM-PON using dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) was proposed to realize low-latency, bandwidth guarantee and auto-discovery process simultaneously in [19]. A unified mobile and PON scheduler known as Mobile-PON has been investigated to improve bandwidth-efficiency and processing-delay on uplink in [20].…”
