Dynamic capabilities and the entrepreneurial university: a perspective on the knowledge transfer capabilities of universities

Abstract: In the knowledge economy, universities have a vital and growing role in supporting innovation and facilitating regional economic development through the addition of a 'third mission' of knowledge transfer activities to the core missions of teaching and academic research. Knowledge transfer capabilities appear to be influenced by the dynamic capabilities and culture of the host university. To date, knowledge transfer activities of universities have proven difficult to quantify with comparisons between instituti… Show more

“…As public-funded organisations, higher education institutions (HEIs) have an obligation to transfer knowledge, so do their stakeholders, which include the business, industrial and education sectors as well as wider communities, in order to support economic development (Brennenraedts et al, 2006;Sharifi et al, 2014;O'Reilly et al, 2019). Knowledge transfer (KT) has become one of the core missions of HEIs, which are expected to create knowledge assets through conducting research and development activities and transferring the knowledge acquired to their recipients, i.e.…”

“…One of the roles of entrepreneurial universities is to stimulate and nurture entrepreneurship among different organizational stakeholders (Klofsten et al, 2019). Previous studies of entrepreneurial universities have consistently highlighted the important role they play in supporting entrepreneurship (see Duruflé et al, 2018;Audretsch et al, 2016;Klofsten, 2000;Nurmi & Paasio, 2007;Hannon, 2013;O'Reilly et al, 2019;Matlay, 2008;Graf & Menter, 2021;Wagner et al, 2021). From an entrepreneurial university perspective, one of the key challenges relates to appropriate formal organizational structures that meet the actual needs of university-based entrepreneurs across the different stages of entrepreneurship -latent, emergent, launch, and growth (Caiazza et al, 2020).…”
