Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MRI of Prostate Cancer at 3 T: A Study of Pharmacokinetic Parameters

Abstract: MRI of the prostate performed at 3 T using an endorectal coil produces high-quality T2-weighted images; however, specificity for prostate cancer is improved by also performing dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI and using pharmacokinetic parameters, particularly K(trans) and k(ep), for analysis. These results are comparable to published results at 1.5 T.

“…In this case, the use of the proposed linear fitting may lead to fitting deviations. However, according to the reported values in the literature, fortunately very few k ep values over 5/min have been reported for different kinds of tumors and normal tissues (21,(25)(26)(27)(28)(29), indicating the feasibility and practicability of using this mapping method for different DCE-MRI applications. As seen in Table 1, the narrower k ep range to be fit, the better linearity is found between TSF and k ep .…”

“…Li et al (14) showed that the K trans value was distinctly higher in malignant breast lesions than in benign breast lesions. Amarnath et al (15) (17) showed that the K trans and K ep values of tumor tissue are markedly higher than those in the normal peripheral zone, while V e values indicated no significant difference between the two lesions. The diagnostic efficacy of changes in V e values in benign and malignant tumors remains debatable.…”

“…DCE takes advantage of the unique characteristics associated with the abnormal tumor vasculature to assess aggressiveness of the disease. The usefulness of DCE in detecting, localizing, and staging prostate cancer is well documented in literature [58,[86][87][88][89][90]. Additionally, several studies have reported promising findings on the utility of DCE parameters in discriminating prostate cancer based on aggressiveness of the disease [91,92].…”
