By raising evolutionary network connections, a software‐defined network (SDN) offers a well‐managed and flexible novel network topology. The SDN efforts are provided to abstract the original network configuration for business applications and web services. Additionally, the SDN modifies the network management policies such as topology policies, deployment policies, the applicability, and infrastructure maintenance. One of the important features of the SDN is standardizing the network interfaces with the precise functional semantics in application and control flow layers. In another hand, specification and evaluation of the existing network interfaces is a main and significant challenge to prove the correctness of the configurable scenarios in the SDN approach. Recently, formal verification presents a high potential platform to evaluate the main‐layer scenarios of the SDN as the novel perspective in this area. Up to now, there is no survey and state‐of‐the‐art review on the formal verification methods in the SDN. This paper provides a systematic literature review (SLR) for the formal verification methods in the SDN in form of the SDN plans to recognize the state of the art of the open challenges. The presented SLR is classified into three main fields: application plan, data plan, and control plan approaches. The verification mechanisms are compared with each other according to the important factors such as structural properties, quality‐of‐service metrics, applied algorithms, and measurement tools.

Traditional IP networks are difficult to manage, owing to their rapid expansion and dynamic changes. Software‐defined networks are introduced to simplify network management by separating the network control plane from the packet forwarding plane. Using one or several controllers, SDN switches can be configured to forward data packets to their destinations. The controller placement problem aims to determine the number of controllers and their locations to meet network service requirements. Early approaches used the k‐median and k‐center algorithms, which select k controllers to minimize propagation latency without considering network resilience. In this paper, we developed a new nodal metric, nodal disjoint path (NDP), which measures a node's importance in terms of its diverse connectivity to other nodes. Based on NDP, we propose two algorithms, NDP‐global and NDP‐cluster, for determining the locations of the k controllers to increase network robustness against targeted attacks. We apply the two selection algorithms to four US‐based fiber‐level networks and evaluate their resilience against five centrality‐based attacks and random failures. The evaluation results indicate that selecting controllers by the NDP‐global algorithm, compared with the NDP‐cluster, k‐median, and k‐center algorithms, provides better network resilience in the face of centrality‐based attacks and random failures. The results also indicate that the NDP‐cluster algorithm has a delay performance comparable to that of the k‐median algorithm and provides higher network resilience.

The integration of software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) enables the flexible deployment of network services and significant reduction in service provisioning cost. In particular, SDN, as a new networking paradigm, supports the flexible provisioning of new network services. Meanwhile, in NFV, the service request from end user can be represented as the service function chain (SFC). However, with the continuously increasing of network users and constant enlargement in network scale, the deployment of network services in the large-scale SDN network, which is composed of multiple SDN domains, becomes more challenging since these SDN domains are managed and maintained by different network operators and service providers. To address the above challenge, in this paper, we study the problem of how to deploy network services across multiple SDN domains optimally. Specifically, we first formulate this problem as an optimization problem by jointly minimizing the total number of SDN domains occupied by SFCs and the corresponding network resource consumption cost. We propose a novel heuristic deployment algorithm to solve this optimization problem. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed heuristic deployment algorithm is effective and outperforms the comparison algorithms in terms of the total service cost.
