Dynamic Force Measurement Vehicle (DFMV) and Its Application to Measuring and Monitoring Road Roughness

Abstract: A method for measuring the longitudinal profile of a highway or off-highway surface is given. As a paper presented at a “Vehicle, Tire Pavement Interface” meeting, this profile method is of particular interest to those involved in the study of vehicle response, as well as pavement roughness. The advantages and uses of a wave-number spectrum presentation of road roughness is discussed.

“…The ground/tire interface motion into the vehicle is used as the measure of the terrain elevation [15], and the measurement is limited at the short wavelengths by the length of the tire footprint in contact with the terrain. Specifically, variations in the terrain elevation with a wavelength equal to or less than the length of the tire footprint cannot be measured, since the elevation seen by the tire at that wavelength is at the maximum attenuation.…”

“…The principal dimensions of the trailer were designed through the theoretical modeling analysis to measure the 20∼0.3m/cycle frequency range [8,9]. An overall length, wheel base, track and tire radius of the trailer are 3.1m, 1.2m, 1.8m and 0.287m, respectively.…”
