Dynamic Gene Expression and Alternative Splicing Events Demonstrate Co-Regulation of Testicular Differentiation and Maturation by the Brain and Gonad in Common Carp

Abstract: The common carp (Cyprinus carpio) accounts for approximately 10% of the annual freshwater aquaculture production and is an ideal model to study cyprinidae reproduction. Female common carp grow faster than the males; therefore, related research presents an opportunity with high application value. Although we have a detailed understanding of common carp’s early gonadal differentiation process, information about genome-wide gene expression, regulation, and underlying molecular mechanisms during this process remai… Show more

“…Recently, the genomes of S. dumerili 3 and three others different Seriola species, Japanese amberjack ( S. quinqueradiata ) 4 , Almaco jack ( S. rivoliana ) 5 and yellowtail amberjack ( S. lalandi ) 6 , have been successfully sequenced and assembled. Deep sequencing has revolutionized the fields of biology and aquaculture, offering isoform precision and high-throughput capabilities for understanding candidate genes that control commercial traits 7 . However, the greater amberjack genome has currently been elucidated only at the scaffold level 3 , and the available gene models in this genome are mostly derived from computational prediction, which can be incomplete or even inaccurate.…”

“…The chromosome-level whole-genome sequence of common carp is available [20,21]. Although many studies have been performed to analyze the differential expression (DE) genes between the testes and ovaries [18,22,23], the function of ncRNAs in sexual differentiation has not been reported. There is room for improvement in functional genomics research in common carp, and more omics data are required.…”
