Dynamic Modeling and Operation Strategy for a Microgrid With Wind and Photovoltaic Resources

Abstract: This paper presents a dynamic modeling and control strategy for a sustainable microgrid primarily powered by wind and solar energy. A current-source-interface multiple-input dc-dc converter is used to integrate the renewable energy sources to the main dc bus. Potential suitable applications range from a communication site or a residential area. A direct-driven permanent magnet synchronous wind generator is used with a variable speed control method whose strategy is to capture the maximum wind energy below the … Show more

“…However due to high order model of microgrid and its complexity, many studies are performed based on digital computer simulation software packages such as Power Systems Computer Aided Design (PSCAD)/Electromagnetic Transients including DC (EMTDC) and MATLAB/Simulink/Simpowersystem to select appropriate control parameters on a trial and error basis [78][79][80][81][82][83]. These scholarly works emphasize that simulation-based modeling approaches facilitate a powerful tool to investigate the behavior of microgrid.…”

“…Since the PMSM wind generator requires a rectifier that performs ac-dc power conversion, the power conversion efficiency of the rectifier is also considered in Equation (1). By assuming the blade angle pitch is 0 • , the maximum value of the rotor power coefficient, C p max , can be determined as [25,26] …”

“…In these, solar energy seems more popularly exploited because of its advantages. The structural model of a photovoltaic (PV) system was presented in [1,2], and strategies for extracting power from PV systems at maximum power point operation were introduced in [3][4][5]. The PV system is an important module of a PV generator (PVG), acting as a primary energy source.…”
