PurposeThis article introduces the Special Issue on Sustainable Management of Heritage Buildings in long-term perspective.Design/methodology/approachIt starts by reviewing the gaps in knowledge and practice which led to the creation and implementation of the research project SyMBoL—Sustainable Management of Heritage Buildings in long-term perspective funded by the Norwegian Research Council over the 2018–2022 period. The SyMBoL project is the motivation at the base of this special issue.FindingsThe editorial paper briefly presents the main outcomes of SyMBoL. It then reviews the contributions to the Special Issue, focussing on the connection or differentiation with SyMBoL and on multidisciplinary findings that address some of the initial referred gaps.Originality/valueThe article shortly summarizes topics related to sustainable preservation of heritage buildings in time of reduced resources, energy crisis and impacts of natural hazards and global warming. Finally, it highlights future research directions targeted to overcome, or partially mitigate, the above-mentioned challenges, for example, taking advantage of no sestructive techniques interoperability, heritage building information modelling and digital twin models, and machine learning and risk assessment algorithms.

Study on applicability of two modal identification techniques in irrelevant cases is made in this paper. The following techniques are considered: peak picking based on correlation analysis (PP-CA), dedicated for ambient vibrations and eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA), formulated for free-decay vibrations investigation. Irrelevant cases are found when analyzed signals are different than recommended to a given technique. The study is conducted on examples of two real structures: masonry tower and steel railway bridge. Both cases are diverse in age, material, excitation and vibrations energy. The signals measured on the tower are suitable for the PP-CA technique (ambient vibrations), while the signals measured on the bridge are suitable for the ERA (free-decay vibrations). However, both methods have been applied to both systems. Natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios are identified and the effectiveness of the irrelevant technique is assessed in relation to the results obtained by the relevant method in each case.

As a former scholarship holder of the SEEFORM PhD program, the first author would like to express his gratitude for participation in the program by publishing an overview of two ongoing research projects in the special issue of the Scientific Journal of Civil Engineering dedicated to the celebration of 15 years of SEEFORM. Both projects are reflecting the current research interest and show the progress after the graduation.The project STREP targets experimental investigations of mechanical properties of two repointing mortars, polymer fibre-reinforced cement-based mortar, Reparatur Mortar FZ + polypropylene straps and lime mortar with crushed brick. The main target of the second project, MPC, is testing of a real-time digital structural health monitoring solution applied to a representative structure, reinforced concrete bell tower of a church.
