Dynamic networks of cortico-muscular interactions in sleep and neurodegenerative disorders

Rossella Rizzo,
Jilin W. J. L. Wang,
Anna DePold Hohler
et al.

Abstract: The brain plays central role in regulating physiological systems, including the skeleto-muscular and locomotor system. Studies of cortico-muscular coordination have primarily focused on associations between movement tasks and dynamics of specific brain waves. However, the brain-muscle functional networks of synchronous coordination among brain waves and muscle activity rhythms that underlie locomotor control remain unknown. Here we address the following fundamental questions: what are the structure and dynamic… Show more

“…Indeed, the use of causal indices based on mathematically more sophisticated methods may provide further insights and should be the focus of future research in the field. Most importantly, because the field of network physiology is still developing with application in various diseases (Berner et al., 2022 ; dos Santos et al., 2022 ; Hall et al., 2024 ; Legault et al., 2024 ; Lehnertz et al., 2023 ; Rizzo et al., 2023 ) and scenarios including in sports and sleep analysis among others (Antonacci et al., 2023 ; Difrancesco et al., 2023 ; Ganglberger et al., 2023 ; Mangalam et al., 2024 ; Marsh et al., 2023 ; Sides et al., 2023 ), the methods available for detecting physiological connectivity as well as for quantifying such connectivity will depend on the nature of the research question being assessed, the type, quality, and quantity of data available as well as the technical repertoire at the disposal of researchers.…”

“…Decompensated cirrhosis is a late stage of liver cirrhosis characterized by multiple organ dysfunction with patients developing ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, portal hypertension, kidney failure, cardiomyopathy, abnormal pulmonary function, immune dysfunction, or impairment of circadian rhythms (D'Amico et al, 2022;Geng et al, 2022;Liu et al, 2022;Montagnese et al, 2010;Rodríguez-Roisin & Krowka, 2008). The development of hepatic decompensation marks a pivotal stage in the clinical evolution of cirrhosis and is associated with poor prognosis.…”
