Dynamic Pricing for Network Revenue Management: A New Approach and Application in the Hotel Industry

Abstract: Dynamic pricing for network revenue management has received considerable attention in research and practice. Based on data obtained from a major hotel, we use a large-scale numerical study to compare the performance of several heuristic approaches proposed in the literature. The heuristic approaches we consider include deterministic linear programming with resolving and three variants of dynamic programming decomposition. Dynamic programming decomposition is considered one of the strongest heuristics and is th… Show more

“…Revenue management research has drawn attention in recent decades from scholars and professionals focused on areas such as RM uses, processes, and structures. There has been a rise in RM models such as the hedonic price model for measuring the impacts of various factors on hotel prices [17], the successive consumer decision procedures model [18], dynamic and deterministic programming models, used to manage matters of RM in hotels [19], RM implementation and strategy models [10], the choice model [20], the room intensification integrated model for hotel proceeds [21], forecasting models [22], and the multinomial logit model for RM [23].…”

“…They find that the deterministic model obtains better results when analyzing the whole demand hotel behavior. In terms of hotel DP, Zhang and Weatherford (2016) highlight that the deterministic linear programing performs well when the different network effects are considered, that is, the effects on demand and capacity caused by multiple lengths of stay, while the demand uncertainty is ignored. Meanwhile, the stochastic DP formulation is able to solve the demand uncertainty, but the network effects are only captured through bid prices and prices proration.…”

“…General stochastic network models, which are based on Markov decision processes, dynamic programming decomposition and several types of approximations, are offered by Van Ryzin and Talluri [114], Zhang and Lu [133] and Zhang and Weatherford [134]. Meissner and Strauss [89] incorporated customer choice into these models, in which probability of selecting a certain product by the arriving customer is given.…”
