Dynamic Regulation of Barrier Integrity of the Corneal Endothelium

Abstract: The corneal endothelium maintains stromal deturgescence, which is a prerequisite for corneal transparency. The principal challenge to stromal deturgescence is the swelling pressure associated with the hydrophilic glycosaminoglycans in the stroma. This negative pressure induces fluid leak into the stroma from the anterior chamber, but the rate of leak is restrained by the tight junctions (TJs) of the endothelium. This role of the endothelium represents its barrier function. In healthy cornea, the fluid leak is … Show more

“…This allows the endothelium to function as a barrier, forming resistance to the permeability of solutes and fluid through paracellular transport routes. 30,33 There are integral proteins in the cellular membrane, the aquaporins (AQP), which with the Na þ /K þ ATPase pump participate in the fluid movement across the endothelium and function as water selective channels. The isoform AQP-1 is expressed by the corneal endothelial cells and the lens epithelium.…”

“…The corneal endothelium maintains stromal deturgescence, which is a prerequisite for corneal transparency (SRINIVAS, 2010). Endothelial parameters that can be quantified principally included mean cell area, cell density, polymegathism and pleomorphism (PIGATTO et al, 2004;PIGATTO et al, 2005b;SELIG et al, 2015).…”

“…contributes to corneal transparency that is essential for optimum vision and regulates ocular pressure ( 1 ). Although a healthy cornea is avascular of blood and lymph vessels, hypertension or glaucoma can cause injury through abrasion of the endothelial cell lining leading to neovascularization, which if uncontrolled causes scarring and can lead to blindness ( 2,3 ).…”
