Dynamic Scale Theory for Characterizing Surface Morphology of Layer-by-Layer Films of Poly(o-methoxyaniline)

Abstract: The dynamic scale theory and fractal concepts are employed in the characterization of surface morphological properties of layer-by-layer (LBL) films from poly(o-methoxyaniline) (POMA) alternated with poly(vinyl sulfonic acid) (PVS). The fractal dimensions are found to depend on the procedures to fabricate the POMA/PVS multilayers, particularly with regard to the drying procedures. LBL films obtained via drying in ambient air show a more homogeneous surface, compared to films dried under vacuum or a flow of nit… Show more

“…4b the data only for the 4-bilayer film. The two distinct regions marked in the curve have already been observed in LBL films of POMA/PVS [27], which may be attributed to the regions inside and outside the domains (aggregates), each of which has a different morphology and roughness exponent [28]. In fact, the value for L at which there is a change in behavior in the log-log plot varies with the number of deposited layers in the same way as the size of the domains does.…”

“…The samples dried under room conditions seem to be more homogeneous than those dried under vacuum or by nitrogen flow [28]. Silva et al [29] show that the hydrocarbon chains are more ordered using spontaneous water evaporation than those dried by nitrogen flow.…”
