Dynamic Shear Strength Characteristics of Lightweight Sand-EPS Soil

Abstract: Lightweight sand–EPS soil (LSES) is regarded as a kind of sustainable geomaterial for providing a way to reutilize fast-growing waste expanded polystyrene (EPS) packages. It is usually applied in marine geotechnical engineering to solve the excessive settling of soft ground or bumps at bridge heads due to its merits such as low density, high strength, and adjustability. Aiming to investigate the dynamic shear strength of LSES made from marine sand, a series of laboratory dynamic triaxial experiments was conduc… Show more

“…In such conditions, a chemical solidification approach is employed [6,7]. In the chemical modification method, different organic and inorganic materials, namely cements, products of petroleum, and synthetic polymers as stabilizers, are employed [8][9][10][11]. These stabilizers avoid wind-induced soil erosion by immobilizing sandy soils.…”

“…Ongoing research abroad efforts predominantly focus on frost heave [5][6][7][8][9], freezing of water in porous materials [10][11][12], and thermo-technical characteristics of soils and building materials [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]. Regarding the application of thermal insulation materials within the structural layers or the broader track substructure, more comprehensive and enduring practical experience is globally available in the utilisation of foam thermal insulation materials, specifically EPS and XPS [22][23][24][25][26], collectively known as geofoam (GFM) in the professional and scientific literature. PIR, PUR, and PF, which belong to the same category of foam thermal insulation materials, have excellent thermal insulation parameters.…”
