Dynamic Tests in Bridge Health Monitoring

Abstract: AbstractDynamic tests are one of the most significant diagnostic procedures applied in Bridge Health Monitoring in many countries. The paper presents a proposal of unified classification of the bridge dynamic tests together with review of the testing methods, including tests under designed and controlled loads, arranged short-term tests under normal traffic loads as well as permanent dynamic monitoring by means of built-in gauges mounted on a structure. Classification of bridge… Show more

“…The challenge lies in the proper installation and validation before functional use 11 14 . Authentication of the newly installed SHM systems is extremely important for the start of their operational life 15 . Besides this, calibration of the SHM system is required which can be ensured by field load testing of bridge.…”

“…Monitoring of concrete structures can be defined as a procedure of systematic data acquisition based on a monitoring plan, which aim to detect changes in materials and/or structural properties. In a general sense, monitoring can be regarded as systematically performed testing [3], [18], [19], [20] . The monitoring systems are generally focused on detecting deterioration having as objective the evaluation of the structural performance in terms of structure safety (Ultimate Limit State, ULS), serviceability (Serviceability Limit State, SLS) and condition (Condition Limit State, CLS) [3], [21].…”

The most popular measuring techniques and types of sensors used in technical systems for concrete structures monitoring are presented in Table 2-4.…”

“…Monitoring of large constructions with high safety and durability requirements, such as bridges, tall buildings, bulkheads, tunnels, silos, chimneys, offshore platforms, is performed with the aim of verifying the hypotheses of the design, the calibration of an FEM model, the update of the technical specifications, as well as to evaluate the health of the structures, to detect the presence of any damage, to locate it, and to quantify its severity [1,2].…”
