Dynamic Thermal Analysis of High-Voltage Power Cable Insulation for Cable Dynamic Thermal Rating

Abstract: Since cable insulation with low thermal conductivity occupies a large proportion of highvoltage cable, an optimization analysis on dynamic thermal behavior of cable insulation can be very useful to improve the accuracy of cable dynamic thermal rating. In this paper, the dynamic thermal analysis of cable insulation is carried out by combining the theoretical method and finite-element analysis (FEA) method. Based on the analysis, it is proved that using IEC recommended transient thermal model of cable insulation… Show more

“…By modelling heat flow with a current in the electric analogy, the different node voltages inherently model the temperatures. Then, the dynamics of the thermal circuit can be represented by using ordinary differential equations [65,66]. The electrothermal approach can be easily extended to model several single-core cables or multicore cables, taking into account the mutual location of the different cores, the presence of further jacketing, and the position of all the cables inside the ducts.…”

“…In particular, a representation of the soil is proposed [58], and the presence of other cables in proximity has been considered and modelled [129]. An improved thermal model proposed for the transient temperature calculation in [66] is based on the approximate solution for the Van Wormer coefficient, treated as a time-varying variable. To better represent the soil thermal response, a non-concentric soil layer model is proposed in [71].…”

“…The permanents of XLPE-0 were used to construct the following simulation model. The establishment of thermal field model and determination of the boundary conditions are not the highlight in this paper, the detail can be referred to literature [25][26][27].…”

“…Cable joints are among the most important factors affecting the maximum current carrying value of cables [7]. In order to place transmission lines, which are used especially in high voltage, under ground cable parameters [8] and environmental parameters are determined [9]. In addition, electrical field control was made at connection points and ends of these cables [10,11].…”
