One important parameter for evaluating the safety and reliability of a ship is o the dynamic ultimate load capacity of ship structures. Because of the importance of this parameter, its determination is essential. In this paper, a novel “two-step” approach for determining the dynamic ultimate load capacity of ship structures is proposed. The main idea of two-step approach is to determine the dynamic ultimate load capacity based on the static ultimate load capacity after accounting for impacts that cause strain on the ship structures. This approach is based on nonlinear finite element method. Here, taking stiffened plate as a case study, the practical application of thus two-step approach is discussed in detail. The results of this approach reveal that the static ultimate load capacity decreases by less than 3% after a stiffened plate is subjected to an impact load whose amplitude corresponds to the dynamic ultimate load capacity. Then, the influence of the impact duration on the failure mode and the effect of the impact load cycles and the impact load sequence on the dynamic ultimate load capacity of the stiffened plate were investigated. Finally, the applicability of the two-step approach to a hull girder is demonstrated. The two-step approach and the conclusions presented in this paper can provide guidance for the evaluation of dynamic ultimate load capacity.

The objective of this work is to provide an overview of the ultimate strength assessment of ageing and damaged ship structures in the last decades. Particular attention is paid to the ultimate strength of plates, stiffened panels, box girders, and entire ship hull structures subjected to corrosion degradation, fatigue cracking, and mechanical damage caused by accidental loading or impact. A discussion on the effect of the cyclic load on the plate rigidity, re-yielding, and ultimate load capacity on the ship hull girder is also part of the present study. Finally, some conclusions and discussions about potential future work are provided, identifying that more studies about the impact of corrosion degradation on the structural behaviour of the stiffened panels and the overall hull girders are needed. Studies related to the dynamic collapse behaviour of corroded and damaged ship structures under time-variant load also requires additional attention.

The work focuses on the study of the structural behaviour of a composite floor beam in the cargo area of a commercial aircraft subjected to static and dynamic loads (typical of hard or crash landing). Experimental tests have been performed in the laboratories of the Dept. of Industrial Engineering (UniNA) jointly with the development of numerical models suitable to correctly simulate the phenomenon through the LS-DYNA software. The definition of a robust numerical model allowed to evaluate the possibility of buckling triggering. The test article was equipped with potting supports on both ends of the tested beam, filling the pots with epoxy resin toughened with glass fiber nanoparticles. This allowed to uniformly load the beam ends in compression and to carry out the tests loading the specimen statically and dynamically, to observe the differences in the behaviour of the beam under two different types of applied load. The result obtained through the comparison between the numerical model and the experimental test was that the dynamic buckling was triggered by a quantitatively smaller load than in the static case. Furthermore, it has been observed that the experimental compressive displacement to trigger the dynamic buckling instability was greater than the displacement observed in the static case.
