Dynamical patterns of human postural responses to emotional stimuli

Abstract: Postural displacements in response to emotional activation have recently been proposed as a direct and objective index of approach–avoidance behavior in humans. Here, we present the results of an experiment designed to assess spontaneous postural responses to discrete affective pictures, briefly presented in random order of valence. Our findings question the interpretation of phasic postural responses to emotional stimuli as approach–avoidance behavior. Further, we identify a robust dynamical pattern, characte… Show more

“…This study has been performed in the frame of the PSYCHE project, where a multidisciplinary and multiparametric analysis of bipolar disorder through the processing of several behavioral, biochemical, and electrophysiological variables has been carried out. Other key variables such as the postural sway can also be taken into account as suggested in [56]. Patient monitoring includes constant feedback which interests the physician and which supports the patient.…”

“…Moreover, the analyses of heart rate focused on the angry and happy blocks alone and excluded the neutral block. Establishing the robustness of the heart rate effect is especially important as changes in body sway alone, without heart rate reduction, can also be explained by attention processes, rather than by freezing (Hagenaars et al, 2014a , b , see also Bradley, 2009 ; Perakakis et al, 2012 ).…”

“…Within the scope of movement variability, Perakakis et al have pointed out that the emotional milieu may play a crucial role in approach and avoidance behavior. These authors measured postural sway while subjects stood on a force platform viewing pictures from three affective categories: pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral (Perakakis et al, 2012). Our study was unlikely to be influenced by emotional factors as it was located in the movement laboratory and participants were familiar with the space and the principle investigators.…”
