The paper considers the effect of low-amplitude acoustic oscillations on the temperature field in the flame formed during the combustion of kerosene gasoline. As a result of using the IRT-method, sets of thermograms of the combustion process were obtained. For the obtained thermograms, the distribution of high-temperature inhomogeneities in the flame plume was analyzed. As a result, it was obtained that the effect of acoustic oscillations on the flame plume causes a change in the height of the plume, a change in the combustion rate. When analyzing the spectra of temperature changes, characteristic pulsations, which are different, depending on the flame zone, were observed. Analysis of the distribution of temperature inhomogeneities under different modes of exposure to pressure pulsations, allowed to identify the characteristic modes in which there is a change in the geometric dimensions of the temperature inhomogeneity distribution zone.

Displacement and Extinction of Jet Diffusion Flame Exposed to Speaker-Generated Traveling Sound Waves

Acoustic flame suppression is a potential technology which does away with the need to carry fire-extinguishing media and does not cause secondary pollution. We herein reported an experimental study on the displacement and extinction of jet diffusion flames exposed to speaker-generated traveling sound waves with a frequency of 110–150 Hz and local sound pressure of 2–16 Pa. The simultaneous movement of the flame and fuel was captured using a high-speed camera and schlieren techniques. Results showed that the flame oscillation was dominated by induced wind produced by membrane vibrations instead of sound pressure, and this induced wind’s frequency was the same as that of sound waves. Moreover, the movement of unburned fuel and flame was not synchronous, which resulted in an interrupted fuel–flame cycle. Consequently, the flame was gradually suppressed and completely extinguished after several oscillation cycles. Finally, we determined the extinction criterion that when the dimensionless gap between the flame and the unburned fuel was greater than or equal to 7, the flame would be extinguished. Results clearly revealed the mechanism of acoustic fire extinguishing, which provided reference for the feasibility of acoustic fire-extinguishing applications.

Self‐excited thermoacoustic instability (SETAI) is a dangerous phenomenon in combustion equipment. While it is widely acknowledged that SETAI behavior is determined by the couple between pressure and heat release oscillation, their phase difference is difficult to predict, which impedes the development of SETAI control technology. With the aim of passive control technology development, this paper conducted experiment on a premixed hedge combustor to explore the mechanism whereby premixed chamber length (LP) and equivalence ratio (φ) collaboratively influence SETAI behavior. Results showed LP mainly affects the pressure mode shape within premixed chamber and consequently alters the phase difference between pressure and flowrate oscillation at combustion chamber inlet. Changing φ gives rise to different reaction time‐lag (τ), thus altering the phase difference between flowrate and reaction heat release oscillation. By introducing this flowrate oscillation, how LP and φ collaboratively determine phase difference between pressure oscillation and heat release oscillation was clarified. The mechanisms identified in this study are consistent with the emerging rationalization of the factors contributing to SETAI, and also provides better understanding on Rayleigh criterion and guidance for SETAI control. With further work on heat release and flow rate measurement, as well as the development on τ description, SETAI can be better predicted and controlled.
