Dynamics of a Polyphosphazene Melt Studied by Solid-State 2H NMR

Abstract: Poly[bis(methoxy)phosphazene] (PBMP) is used as a model to investigate the backbone dynamics of polyphosphazenes approaching their glass transitions. Specifically, we study PBMP featuring deuterated methyl groups so that, as a consequence of fast rotation of the methyl groups, 2 H NMR probes the reorientation of their 3-fold symmetry axes and, thus, of the inorganic backbone. Combining 2 H NMR spin-lattice relaxation, lineshape, and stimulated-echo analyses, we follow the slowdown of the segmental motion upon … Show more

“…58 Solid state 2 H NMR spectroscopy was used to probe polymer chain mobility within poly[bis(methoxy)phosphazene] at temperatures near its glass transition (T g ); this work confirmed the highly flexible nature of the P-N backbone and the commensurately rapid chain mobility, both required for successful polymer electrolytes. 59 A series of high T g polyphosphazenes have been prepared containing diazo-imidazole based chromophores as side groups (cf. 14).…”
