Dynamics of Family Economic Hardship and the Progression of Health Problems of Husbands and Wives During the Middle Years: A Perspective From Rural Mid-West

Abstract: Objectives The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of theoretically important dimensions of stability and change in economic hardship during early middle years on decade-long health problems of husbands and wives. Method The study used prospective data collected from 360 middle-aged husbands and wives during a 12-year period. “…Scar Hypothesis & Reciprocities that health consequences of early and chronic stressful experiences may manifest during the subsequent middle years, which have been shown to be a more vulnerable developmental period (Lorenz et al, 2006;Wickrama et al, 2010). We capture economic hardship in early middle years as a latent construct defined by repeated reports of family economic hardship.…”

“…A growing body of literature suggests that midlife is a sensitive developmental period during which mental and physical health problems proliferate with increasing health heterogeneity (Lachman & James, 1997;Wickrama, Kwag, Lorenz, Conger, & Surjadi, 2010). At least a portion of the increasing health heterogeneity in later life may be attributable to differential exposure to chronically stressful conditions over the life course (House et al, 1994;Lovallo, 2005;Lorenz, Wickrama, Conger, & Elder, 2006).…”

“…Perceived economic hardship reflects the individual’s appraisal of the family’s financial situation and is likely to increase family stress (Conger, Conger, & Martin, 2010). Greater perceptions of economic hardship, including the inability to make ends meet and the need to make financial cutbacks, are associated with worse physical and mental health (Wickrama, Hwa Kwag, Lorenz, Conger, & Surjadi, 2010). Toward reducing health disparities, explication of SES parameters associated with health is essential for effective prevention and intervention (Chen & Paterson, 2006).…”

“…The internal consistency for mothers was .56 in 1991 and was .71 in 2001. In previous applications, this measure has been shown to have good predictive validity (Wickrama, Hwa Kwag, Lorenz, Conger, & Surjadi, ; Wickrama, Kolpack, O'Neal, Beach, & Neppl, ).…”
