Dynamics of gap winds in the Great Rift Valley, Ethiopia: emphasis on strong winds at Lake Abaya

Abstract: Abstract. Lake Abaya, located in the Great Rift Valley (GRV) in Ethiopia, is affected by regularly occurring strong winds that cause water waves, which in turn affect the lake's ecology and food web. The driving forces for these winds, however, are yet unexplained. Hence, the main goal of this study is to provide a physical explanation for the formation of these strong winds in the GRV and especially at Lake Abaya. To this aim, two case studies were performed based on measurements, ERA5 reanalysis data and mes… Show more

“…The direction of the surface winds is generally influenced by the displacement of the ITCZ [46]. The ITCZ reaches its furthest southward position over Africa at 15 • S in winter and its furthest northernmost position at around 15 • N in the summer [47]. We fitted the von Mises distribution to NAME wind trajectories at two different seasons (January and August).…”

“…On a wider scale, the topography of the Grand Rift Valley also determines the wind direction, which results in a variety of wind directions. Local fishermen from the nearby lake identify four winds (Weiß et al, 2022). Arba Minch is mostly dominated by low-rise buildings.…”
